I can only blame our own inability as a so called intelligent species to come to grips with a solution that has been around for a long time. And if we just spent 20% of the money put into oil exploration and other alternatives we would now be well on our way with hydrogen technology and the cure to most of our enviromental problems. But will greed and the money lenders let that happen. We're not smart when the power of paper can and will control and destroy us in the end.

I am an American first and foremost but can't believe our leaders have been so short sighted. In fact, if I were a conspiracy theorist, I'd say this was purposeful.

It has been evident that we needed a strategy for energy since the Carter administration.

I don't believe more drilling is an answer for the immediate future. Oil companies have more than enough current leases on American soil that have not been drilled yet. And, why do we export oil elsewhere if we have such a shortage here in the states?

This war in Irag is dragging down our economy, with the dollar dropping in value, the oil companies speculating on their own commodity, banker's raping the mortgage industry and our failing infrastructure we have been doomed by King George.

So many ways to pinpoint the overtly obvious. Many of these comments I gree with. Certainly, there is an element of selfishness and greed within our national infrastructure and prideful manner as a nation. But once and for all people, you cannot take a nation like ours, one that drives and feeds the world's economies, and lay the money And power in the hands of a meager 1-5% of a 300,000,000 plus. population! and think all will be well. Yes we eat too much, we drive too much, we waste at times, but lets NEVER forget, all you non-Americans so willing to point these things out, we also feed the world, stand along side you in aid and compassion, and ask so little in return. So.......are we Americans as a whole to blame for the economy of the etire world's suffering? .........NO...........you Europeans who pay 8-9.00 a gallon always forget that over half of that price is your tax rate's fault.

Take 1-5% of the people, give them 90% of all the money and power to decide what will be, and eventually these oligogs will rob you blind, and do it legally while blaming YOU. We cannot make folks throughout the world understand our plite, the issues we face here, nor can they offer any real constructive criticism. But we can expect our elected to get it right and start leading with honesty and integrity. Something we have not seen in decades. Like one of you said so well, the oil giants are not complaining, isn't that odd? The gas stations are not complaining, there are no long lines at the pumps (none at all), there are thousands of wells right here on US soil capped and idle. There is 20% or more of our A.N.S. oil being sold to Japan and China(since 1993,) Bush, Cheney and McCaine don't say a word about that, while hawking for more regional drilling! There are no losses of any kind within the oil industry while hitting new record highs every quarter. They say that they have not done any new buiding, research or expansion of any kind. They say that our demand is higher and they need that 18 billion in Bush tax subsidies, .......TO DO WHAT! They testified with those very same lamentations..... it amazes me that they cannot see how making those kinds of remarks just shoots themselves in the foot. Good Lord folks, what kind of club do you need to be hit with to see that these elemental principles of mathamantics and common sense are real do we need to shine the light of the sun upon them to finally get it? Of course speculators are driving this oil industry's profits, and who the hell do you think they work for? ......okay ,THE.......OIL COMPANIES. Could It be that they see the dooms-day of oil and are running "post haste" to gobble up all the real alternatives? Duh.

There has been much said about alternatives to oil, and a few astute thinkers here ,have already recognized the collusion between oil and government to kill, bury or buy these alternatives. GM , Texaco, and Bush in 2001 killed the EV-1 buy diminishing EPA authority in California, then Bush (oil man) set up a 1.2 Billion dollar scam of a hydrogen bait and switch trick, and then GM sold the NMH EV-1 battery rights to Texaco. And,then GM crushed every one of those EV-1 dream cars. Exxon just bought the rights to L.I (Lithuim Ion) batteries for cars and trucks, so even though it's obvious or should be, that alternatives are a must ....sooner or later. It's a sad and terrible circumstance that the most greedy and powerful sources of our energy problems will now control the most viable alternatives, thereby making that as well, too regulated, unreliable, expensive and beholding to the will of the oil companies and the polititions in their pockets.

These people are there to do one thing. To make obcene amounts of money upon more money, and the best way to do that is to buy into the power line of government and feed us, the electorate, a little bit at a time, after taking and taking and taking. So when they finally give a little back, we feel so much better and the cycle continues . There is this misunderstanding by the people in this country that we can't do anything about it. So sad and foolish we who think that, truly are. If all we do is tell ourselves that we can't do ANYTHING, THEN YOU WON'T. Stop letting those greedy power mongers in Washington tell you what will be, vote them out in every general election, also letting the corporate monsters know that they won't have that friendly politition to count on for twisted legislation that only benefits the rich and greedy. Aren't you sick of these looting liars and political hacks pretending to want our vote for the good of this nation while the only thing they EVER do is lie, cheat and steal. See (collusion between Big Business and Government) and GET informed before you vote.

Stay home if you don't need to go, buy less, drive less, fly less, and turn this mess around from witjhin. WE CAN DO THIS. All we need is to finally get motivated and if we don't, then get ready for the next depression. One that will make the 29 crash look like a party. If that happens, I just hope the rerpublicans are in the white house to properly take the blame for thier stupidity, greed, and endless foibles these past forteen years.

God Bless.

Is speculation to blame for high oil prices? Maybe I missed it, but where on planet earth did we grow a "new" continent with 2 billion people and 400 million new cars?

I am French and I when I cam e here I was amazed by the size of the cars and the abuse of it. THen I understood why so many Americans are fat. I never owned a car in Europe because it was too expensive, too difficult to maneuver in the cities and the public transportations were serving any place very well. I agree with Samantha. Americans have to blame themselves! They became lazy and stupid. I think the gas price is not expensive enough: many americans keep on buying and driving big trucks or suvs. Something we never hear in the American media is that the price of oil is actually indexed on the dollar. So if the american economy is not getting better by the end of the year, I don't think gas prices will go down. Americans put themselves in the ditch basically! California started taking measure for new energy vehicles and others...why not the rest of America?
Oh by the way, I ride a scooter at 100MPG, have a tankless water heater and do not use the air conditioning. May be the 'old' Europe has something to teach to the powerful US...

With all the talk of sky-high oil prices and the usage of alternative means of fuel One thing has been greatly overlooked. There has been very little interest in the development of power devices that do not utilize hydro-chemicals. Why is this I ask?????

From what I have been able to gather every attempt by those who purpose the usage of alternative fuels and energy products (that do not involve the monopoly that the oil companies have imposed on the nation) have been vetoed and blacklisted by special interest groups. Nuclear powered automobiles (and transport trucks); The Blacklight Process; Water powered( being broken down into “HHO”…the list is endless… but totally degraded and forced into the background. Special interest groups, especially those employed by the petroleum industry has, in the past, forced the Government into outlaying any process that doesn’t fill their back pockets.

It is about time that alternative fueled transport was allowed to be developed but I do not feel that this will ever happen. Government policies (being backed by political kickbacks …(SPECIAL INTREST FEES going into the pockets of elected officials and those political appointees who have become very rich on the backs of the working poor)) have vetoed every attempt of these products being considered and/or approved for usage.

Through utilizing simple materials, obtained at a local hardware store, I have modified my car (a 1996 ford) so/as it will run on HHO. To date I have put over 120,000 KLS on it at a total cost of just under $275.00 Canadian…. But the government demands that I take it off the road….they stated that it does not meet government standards (I’m not paying gasoline taxes into their fattened coppers) and the fuel has not been approved for usage on the highway (the hydrocarbon special interest groups have demanded that I be jailed for violating different laws governing the usage of fuels). I am also running a generator on HHO which supplies power for my home and business (Last year it cost me just under $12.00) which is also very illegal (I’m not paying taxes on my power usage…..again not fattening the coppers of the special interest groups and the government appointees who make their living robbing the consumer). But, until I’m thrown into prison for my illegal acts (using HHO as a fuel) I’m going to continue do do so.

"NEW YORK - Crude oil futures shot up nearly $7 a barrel Friday, extending big gains from the previous day and racing toward an all-time high after a Morgan Stanley analyst predicted prices could hit $150 by the Fourth of July." - quoted from a news article... if you don't call this speculation, I don't know what it is. Traders are certainly doing their job for their rich clients at the expense of the rest of the world. Where's the morality of this?
