Hong Kong, China (CNN) – Fishermen detained in disputed waters, an angry call from a neighboring government for an “unconditional and immediate” release as tensions rise.

No, it’s not Beijing ire directed at the September arrest of Chinese fishermen by Japanese Coast Guard off the coast of an East China Sea island both countries claim. On Wednesday, the official Vietnam News Agency called for the release of nine Vietnamese fishermen detained by China in the South China Sea last month. China claims the fishermen were using dynamite to catch fish in waters both nations claim.

The dispute over the Senkaku or Diaoyu islands (what you call the rocks poking out of the sea depends on whether you are Japanese or Chinese) raised tensions to the highest levels in Tokyo and Beijing and spurred nationalist demonstrations in both countries. Talks on sharing undeveloped oil fields in the region were halted along with other economic and cultural exchanges.

The dispute in the South China Sea, however, could prove to be more problematic. Malaysia, Vietnam, the Philippines, Brunei and Taiwan all have claims, along with China, on the Spratley and Paracel islands. Tensions have been rising with China’s Southeast Asian neighbors in tandem with Beijing’s growing economic and military might.

At the heart of both disputes is a term of international maritime law known as “Exclusive Economic Zone,” where nations are allowed sole rights to fish and develop resources within 200 nautical miles of a country’s shores.

“The South China Sea issue is very interesting,” Wu Kang, an analyst at the East-West Center in Hawaii, told me recently. While the Japan-China island in dispute is near potential gas fields, the South China Sea “is currently producing quite a bit of oil and gas,” Wu said.

In the background of both China Sea disputes is the U.S. military: The island at the center of the dispute with Tokyo is considered part of Japan in a 1973 U.S. defense agreement. The U.S. conducted joint military maneuvers with Vietnam earlier this year. U.S. Secretary of State Hilary Clinton rattled Beijing when she waded into the territorial dispute at an ASEAN meeting in July, offering to mediate and suggesting a peaceful outcome was in U.S. national interests.

Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi called Clinton’s comments “an attack on China.”

Already, the growing fracas over islands is being labeled “Asia’s New Cold War.” But the heart of the disputes is this:  Who will have unfettered access to the bounty lying below the waters?

Beyond no doubt that the Diaoyu Island belongs to China. It has been as a part of the country for thousands of years.

Actually, who it belongs to for "thousands of years" is irrelevant. The question is when someone came by, there was no definite indication who it belonged to. As the English saying goes, "Finders, keepers". Granted, this saying isn't fair, but Japan's argument is that for many years, China didn't say anything...even during a period of 30 when it was under US control.

A somewhat poor example, but look at North America, which was settled by native Americans for many years. Or for a better example, Alaska, which belonged to Russia but was later sold to the USA before oil was discovered... Of course, in this case, money changed hands and that seems to make any agreement more solid.

@Andrew Qin "Beyond no doubt that the Diaoyu Island belongs to China. It has been as a part of the country for thousands of years."
I love this!!! honestly its beyond ALL doubt. You are just as bad as any government out there. You might as well say its part of china becuase YOU will it to be. ownership of land and islands and rocks have changed all through out human history. 1 thousand years might as well be 1 day!!!! what a joke. I mean really?!?!? China only has 50000000000 billion square miles of land. are 2 rocks going to make a difference? Japan depends on any land, rocks, or fishing areas it can get. Japan doesn't have the luxury to have fish farms like china does.

Now in Tokyo, the press is reporting that the People's Daily, January 8, 1953, has an article explaining the US military in the Ryukyu Islands. Okinawa is part of the Ryukyu's (of course), but it also includes the Senkaku Islands. Remember, the Prople's Daily if the official voice of Communist party. So that Chinese Communist party has recognized the islands to be Japanese. I presume this is something you can easily check out in China. There is also a world map made in China in 1960 showing Senkaku islands as part of Japan.

Andrew, the country "China" has not been around for "thousands of years". It has been unified, divided, unified, divided, in many different ways. Which "China" do you mean?

i think japan is biggest troublemaker in world, japan has only 4 neibouring countries, but japan has terriotory dispute with all of them , that is so enough said.

i think japan will pay price for what it did in the past and what it is doing now ,espeically when japan is actually a rapidly collapsing country now , while its enemy is such a rising power.

The islands are named Diaoyu Islands, which translates into Fishing Islands. If the Chinese have had them for "thousands of years" they would have given them a meaningful name, so clearly they're just after them for nationalistic pride.

it is both , both japan and china has greedy mind to believe everthing belongs to them , by contrast, japanese are even more greedy and evil, japan is such a small country , but japanese wanna control everything in the world even they got stopped by nukes.

In fact, whether an island belongs to a nation or not just depends on the power. No power, no gain.

How could the US owns such a broad territory, from the north to the south, acrossing the Atlantic to the pacific, it is just because of the power.

Palestine were still fighting against Israel. But they don't have power, so they have to be killed for just fishing further than 5km (3 miles) out to sea.

When Chinese call back their power, of course, they want to call back the island ever belonged to them.

It is so simple.Don't forget, ownership just depends on power just like the USA.

as a Chinese,I must say something.
now we should admit the fact: whether the island belongs to china or Japan is not definite.
In my opinion, the problem is that the differences between China and outsides.
In the early and our childhood education, we Chinese all accepted this kind of concept:
Territory integrity runs together with national digity.
And in Chinese's opinion ,the island belongs to China long long ago,so the island is certainly ours.
But I think this kind of concept is doubtful.but even if the concept is not established .There's no saiying can persuade our Chinese the island is Janpan's.
The root cause is the dignity of person.the dignity is from the possesive instinct.
If the concept can not be compromised and unstood by each other. There's no end.
    just my opnion.

shinjukuboy, sovereignty of Ryukyu Islands (琉球), including Okinawa and Senkaku were undetermined after WWII. Potsdam Declaration didn't specify their belongings, but according to the spirit of Potsdam Declaration, Chinese believed these islands should be either independent or under Chinese administration, both claimed by PRC and ROC. Ryukyu Islands were occupied by Americans, Senkaku is under Ryukyu Islands administraion. The Chinese publications back then described Senkaku was part of Ryukyu Islands, but it was not described as Japanese territory. These islands sovereignty was undetermined and occupied by Americans. Americans handed it to Japan in 1970s, PRC and ROC both protested about it. That's where the dispute coming from.
By the way, I found that news in English, in my opinion, there could be a lost in translation error going on. In Chinese, the meaning of 西南部 is "southwest direction", not "southwest part of". I think Japanese politicians should improve their knowledge before making such statement.

Shinjuku boy, stop spreading rumor, if this or of that, Japan always ignores the laws. Just look at how Japan ignore the International banning of commercial hunting of whales and dolphins. Japan killed more than 1000 whales and 25,000 dolphins per year. You are Japanese, you should know the Taiji, where it is famous for the mass (dolphins massacre ) of dolphins and small whales.

Japan renamed the whaling ships to be “research”. What kind of research of Japan doing with the whales? Testing of whale sushi? If for research? Why did the fishermen sells the whales in the market and serve in the restaurants? It is a commercial activity.

From this, we can learn from Japan that, Japan will do anything to twisted the facts to suit their goal.

A single print of world map or a news report would't mean anything. Diaoyu Island has been part of china long before Qin Dynasty, but it was later invaded and occupied by Japan during the second World War. What Japanese had done during W.W.II should never be justified. Diaoyu Island was, is and will always be part of China.

Senkaku Islands have always been Japan's territory since declaration of sovereignty in 1895. No country claimed anything until an UN report in 1970 said there may be oil underground. China and Taiwan claimed in !971 and 1970.

    also see the following article.
"A classified 1969 map produced by the People's Republic of China official map authority lists the "Senkaku Islands" as Japanese territory, underming Beijing's more recent claims that the islands it calls the Daiyoutai Islands are Chinese territory. Tha map blosters Tokyo's claims to the sovereignty. "

It is never a question of 'who it belongs to' but a question of who can benefit from the resources within the seabed.

Just like how the US propagates its agenda upon the world through gunboat diplomacy, China is in an advantageous position with regards to these islands, as a result of their rising eminence.

Japan is wielding a double sided blade with no handle here. The stronger they resist and insist upon their "right" to these islands, whatever the outcome, they lose. Should China obtain ownership of these islands, it will be a huge loss of face for the Japanese, and if China is forced to renege its claim to the islands, it will mean an even bigger economic impact with disastrous consequences for Japan.

So the question here is, how dedicated are the Japanese to these islands? How far are they willing to go, because the Chinese have made it clear they will stake everything to maintain national integrity.

For that "island" in the East China Sea, the dispute happen after WW2, when Japan need to return some territory to China, Russia, Korea, etc. Anyway, my understanding might not be all correct, but at that time until now, there are many confusion including some agreement before WW2 and recognised sovereignty (maybe by UN is better). As the "island" is not habitable or habitable, that raised other arguments too previously.

no it hasn't Qin. There has never been anyone settled on that island until the Japanese first established permanent settlements a little over 100 years ago. What's more it's closest to the Philippines and international treaties guarantee all countries involved have the right to use it. China has no right to kidnap anyone Vietnamese or other.

Yeah, Mongolians should claim the whole china and half of Russia because these lands belonged to Mongolian Empire about 700 years ago. Why are you seizing the Mongolian's land after all?

The map of china was expanding or shrinking all the time. And in Yuan and Qing dynasty China was even conquered as a whole by barbarians. In the history, countries evaded other countries or were invaded. Losing control of an island far from mainland during two world wars was totally normal. Crying that "that island belonged to us XXXX years ago" is no more than stupid mindless pointless argument.

  32. In 1895 Japan defeated China and got the islands in the peace settlement

The Japanese definitively defeated China in a war in 1895 near Dalien over who would have "influence" over the Korean peninsula. The islands were ceded to Japan along with Taiwan in the peace treaty. After WWII Japan lost the colonies of Korea and Taiwan, but the islands were considered part of the prefecture of Okinawa which was ceded to the United States. Then were given back to Japan in 1973 when the United States returned Okinawa to Japan. China did not lay any claim on these islands at any point in its history until two years after possible oil and natural gas reserves were discovered in 1969. China's claim on these islands is through the claim on Taiwan.

Shinjukuboy, Japan has made maps and made references showing Diaoyu Island belonging to China, probably more than China ever did recognize it to be part of Japan. Besides by recognizing Okinawa to be part of Japan DOES NOT mean that Diaoyu island of necessity goes with it. That's your logic. It doesn't hold water.

Slowly, but surely, the world is beginning realise that China is not a cuddly panda – the benign economic powerhouse interested only in trade. That's the image the Chinese government would love the world to have. The fact is that China is just another selfish world power interested in intimidating, dominating and ripping off smaller countries. China's intransigence in continuing to support the ruthless dictatorship in Sudan that was murdering its people in Darfur and southern Sudan should have been the writing on the wall for the rest of the world. China supported the brutal government in Sudan because of oil and other natural resources being plundered by the Chinese. This is replicated in a number of other African countries like dictator Mugabe's Zimbabwe. I am certain that within the next 10-15 years China will simultaneously become the top world economic power as well as gain the dubious accolade of the most despised nation.

  65. Victim of japan invasion

All Japanese and the other developed capitalist countries’s guys, here, I don’t want to argue that the Diaoyu island and Ryukyu belong to China or not,but all of you should clearly know the background of the territory controversy! The basic fact is that Diaoyu island is China’s territory in history, at that time, all aspects of China was stronger than Japan, until the later of Qing dynasty, the declining China drew nearly all west capitalist countries’ invasion! In the series of the invade wars, one province of China—Taiwan, including its affiliated islands ,was occupied by Japan,And after world warⅡ,Diaoyu and Ryukyu islands were taken over by United States, the only country who was benefit from the world warⅡ. however, there was no reasonable excuse for US to keep the territory for a long time,So US handed all the islands to Japan ,not to China, for not willing to see a potential rival—China, a red political power country, become a strong counterpart, and added friction to balance China and Japan to maintain its world—boss position. At this time, China was still struggling in the civil war, having no time to attend the remote islands. After PRC established, the regain of international status and “cultural revolution” cost its decades of years! Until after the “cultural revolution”, China proclaim its sovereignty of Diaoyu and Ryukyu islands. So for the other courtries’ uninform people, it seems to be that China was the invader, but in fact, absolutely reverse!

But Ray, going by that logic the Diaoyu Islands should belong to the Chinese because Chinese (or more precisely Taiwanese) fishermen have known about the islands for several centuries (at least since the Ming dynasty) and have used the waters as fertile fishing grounds. That is why, in Chinese, they are known as the Diaoyu or Fishing Islands. The islands are also 120 miles from the coast of Taiwan (within the 200 mile limits) but 240 miles from the coast of Okinawa (BEYOND the 200 mile limit of control according to international law). Although the islands are unoccupied I would think it likely that Chinese fishermen over the years may have used the islands as a temporary harbour during times of inclement weather.

I am not an expert in maritime law but common sense would tell anyone that on the basis of usage and proximity to Taiwan, the Diaoyu island belongs to Taiwan. So logically, it should be a dispute between China and Taiwan and Japan should be out of the picture. I don't think those treaties Japan made with the Ching Dynasty in 1895 are valid these days- unless you believe in might makes right. In that case watch out because China definately has the economic and even military muscle to challenge Japan and eventually America in the future. And I think the American government made a mistake with that agreement to give jurisdiction to the Japanese. I think they realize that mistake and that is why (see articles by Nicolas Kristof) they will probably not support Japan in future disputes concerning the Diaoyu.

One final note, this is not just a China vs. Japan thing. Taiwan is hoping mad about this for reasons mentioned above but also for the fact that despite the fact that Taiwanese fishermen have used the Diaoyus for countless generations they are increasingly being harrassed by militant and aggressive patrol boats from the Japanese coast guard. I am talking about patrol boats ramming Taiwanese fishing boats and arresting and then fining the crews. Sound familiar? Yes, one can squak about how it is Japanese territory but honestly, even if that were so (which it isn't) does this justify endangering human life, destroying their property and livelihood (their fishing boats) and then arresting them for assault on Japanese citizens! Now you know why the Mainland Chinese were mad when it happened to one of their boats

OK,Ok you Japanese apologists, the Commies staged all this I'll hear you reply but how do you explain the incidents with the Taiwanese?

No one should comment if they do not know the history of the matter, that China was cut up by 8 countries during Ching Dynasty. Qing China ceded the islands together with Taiwan to Japan in 1895. China took Taiwan back in 1945 after WWII. The US government b/w 1945 and 1973 intentionally made Diaoyu islands sort of a no-owner property. It's a grand strategy that serves the Amerian interests by planting an unavoidable explosive seed b/w China and Japan.

Which country do the islands belonged to doesn't matter anymore. It all depends on who has the upper hand in the western Pacific between the US and China. Japan is close to a non-factor in the equivation.

The islands in the South China are just like their counterparts in the E. China Sea.

Balance of power between the US and China is the fundamental factor.

World War II ended in 1945. Nazi Germany surrendered first on May 8th. Imperial Japan on August 15th.
Since then, Germany continues a campaign of compensation and education to accept guilt for WW II atrocities while Japan follows a long policy of official denial of wrongdoing.

Japan continues to deny the atrocities of the past such as the notorious “rape of Nanking” or the treatment of Koreans. In 2004 Miyako Masuda, a 23-year veteran teacher, dared to teach the truth about Japan’s role in China and Korea in her history class; she was removed from teaching. Her actions came in response to a Tokyo politician’s public statement that “Japan never invaded China and Korea.”

During the Japanese occupation of China and Korea, hundreds of thousands of Chinese and Korean women were used as “sex slaves” by Japanese soldiers, a fact documented in many sources and poignantly discussed by Chinese-American historian Iris Chang whose study of Japanese atrocities are the definitive source on the subject. These captive women were known as comfort women.

The Japanese military during the 1930s and 1940s is often compared to the military of Nazi Germany during 1933–45 because of the sheer scale of suffering. Much of the controversy regarding Japan's role in World War II revolves around the death rates of prisoners of war and civilians under Japanese occupation. The historian Chalmers Johnson has written that:

It may be pointless to try to establish which World War Two Axis aggressor, Germany or Japan, was the more brutal to the peoples it victimised. The Germans killed six million Jews and 20 million Russians [i.e. Soviet citizens]; the Japanese slaughtered as many as 38 million Filipinos, Malays, Vietnamese, Cambodians, Indonesians and Burmese, at least 28 million of them ethnic Chinese. Both nations looted the countries they conquered on a monumental scale, though Japan plundered more, over a longer period, than the Nazis. Both conquerors enslaved millions and exploited them as forced labourers—and, in the case of the Japanese, as [forced] prostitutes for front-line troops. If you were a Nazi prisoner of war from Britain, America, Australia, New Zealand or Canada (but not Russia) you faced a 4% chance of not surviving the war; [by comparison] the death rate for Allied POWs held by the Japanese was nearly 30%.[24]

According to the findings of the Tokyo Tribunal, the death rate among POWs from Asian countries, held by Japan was 27.1%.[25] The death rate of Chinese POWs was much higher because—under a directive ratified on August 5, 1937 by Emperor Hirohito—the constraints of international law on treatment of those prisoners was removed.[26] Only 56 Chinese POWs were released after the surrender of Japan.[27] After March 20, 1943, the Japanese Navy was under orders to execute all prisoners taken at sea.

A 1785 Japanese map, the Sangoku tsūran zusetsu (三国通覧図説) by Hayashi Shihei adopted the Chinese kanji (釣魚臺 Diaoyutai) to annotate the Senkaku Islands, which were painted in the same color as China.

The Diaoyu islands (Senkaku Islands in Japanese) were China's froniter off-shore defence against wokou(Japanese pirates) during the Ming and Qing dynasties (1368-1911). The map of the Asian continent, including the map complied by Japanese in the 18th century,[28] unambiguously shows the islands were part of China.

The islands were taken during the First Sino-Japanese War in 1894-1895 and formally ceded by the Treaty of Shimonoseki. The letter of Japanese Minister of Foreign Affairs in 1884, which states that the annexation of the islands "would attract the attention of the Ching Nation (China)", shows that Japan knew the islands were not terra nullius (No man's land).

Potsdam Declaration stated that "Japanese sovereignty shall be limited to the islands of Honshū, Hokkaidō, Kyūshū, Shikoku and such minor islands as we determine.", where "we" referred to the WWII victors and leaders who met at Potsdam, USA, UK and China (ROC at the time). Japan accepted the terms when it surrendered.

According to the Chinese claims,[28] the islands were known to China at least since the Ming Dynasty and were controlled by the Qing Dynasty along with Taiwan.[28] The earliest written record of Diaoyutai dates back to 1403 in a Chinese book Voyage with the Tail Wind (順風相送), which recorded the names of the islands that voyagers had passed on a trip from Fujian to the Ryukyu Kingdom.

By 1534, all the major islets of the island group had been identified and named in the book Record of the Imperial Envoy's Visit to Ryukyu (使琉球錄).[29] and were the Ming Dynasty's sea-defense frontier.

Ok, if this is the case why Beijing not try to use force to recapture the island? Maybe i say maybe Fujian will disappear from the map, or even Shanghai ? I guess only the Japanese can teach Beijing a lesson or two about sovereignty. And Do not tell me Beijing has 100 men to spare

I love how this discussion has gone on-and-on and even talking about WWII when the *point* of this article (for those of you who read only the comments but none of the article) is that China has disputes with other countries. Please re-read the article... Japan has disputes, China has disputes, and even USA has disputes with Canada (somewhere along the Washington/BC border, I think).

As this planet gets more and more people who need more and more land and more and more fish and oil, such disputes like this will grow. It would be nice if someone like the UN steps in and helps mediate them before things get even worse.

@Just another Chinese person - "Using North America as an example to rationalize Japan's occupation of Diaoyu Islands? What a typical white logic!" Ans: I don't know if it is "white logic", but in case you haven't realized, you are posting messages on a news source based in the USA. You want to post comments to get North Americans to be as upset at Japan as you, but you don't realize the audience of this site.

@rabauldevil Thank you for a rational post! "Finders, keepers" was a simple way of putting it and a more correct way is the contract you mentioned between Ching Dynasty and Japan in 1895. Clearly, if I put on a piece of paper that says I give you California, that is not legally binding. Why? I'm just a nobody... But why should an agreement between the Ching Dynasty and Japan not be valid "these days"? The USA continues to allow its citizens the right to bare arms because of a constitution enacted in 1776. Hong Kong was returned from the UK to China because of a contract signed in the 1890s. I think a contract between the Ching Dynasty and Japan is perfectly valid. The question is whether the parties that signed it had the authority to sign it. (And I don't know the answer to that...did not look that far - I hope someone does to find a solution to the problem.)

If so, then it comes down to the example with Russia and Alaska. They signed it away to the USA, oil was found, but too bad...contract signed. If we do not honor contracts (both in international and common law - and even when the other person cheats us), then many things in our society falls apart.

The problem is that China says Senkaku-the name of island-is Chinese territory despite China knows Senkaku is clearly Japanese territory. Senkaku is now uninhabited island, but Japanese were working at factoy of dried bonito from 1880 to 1940. They ignore many evidence we have. China made forge, too. I have some maps. The maps which were published by China in 1905 and1967, Senkaku is Japanese territory. But Senkaku suddenly disappears on Chinese maps in 1972, 1987. They write Chinese name "Diaoyu "instead. I heard China started teaching" Diaoyu is Chinese territory" at shool about 35 years ago .The possibillity of oil was found in 1970'. Chinese are already all brainwashed. Many Chinese think Japan took "Diaoyu" at the war so called Sino-Japanese war1894-1895. But, there were already japanese living in Senkaku.

Definitely ,all sovereignty of these disputed islands are always belong to Chinese people .what cause the disputes were derived from Qing dynasty in history. As the China became powerless and weakness after Opium war which UK imposed on Chinese and others so called civilized Countries,Such as French,German ,Japan and so on ,colonized and invaded China. The invasion war costs much to Chinese People,,the lives, the land and more precious resourses.
As a nation of weakness and powerless in military ,economic and political are innated incapable to protect the sovereignty of these island .
However, time is different ,after almost 50 years of peaceful development in China.Chinese people has the capability to protect Chinese own lands and resources .We do not willing to be bullied or invaded again by Some national which is still hostile to Chinese people.
Anyway,As Mr Deng xiaoping said.Chinese people is kind and generous ,we can put aside the disputed and peacefully share the resources around these disputed areas. The world need development in peace and win-win.
Absolutely , Any imposed war on Chinese will be a disaster to the Human being.

China basically is evil and would have been better off completely conqurered by Japan back in WWII. Just look at Japan, they have Sony, Toshiba, Honda, Toyota, Mitsubishi, Sonyo, Hitachi, Mazda, Nissan and the list goes on.

There are no such islands belong to China. We all know that and a three year old kid knows that China military are getting stronger and those expansionists in Beijing think it is the right time for them to invade other countries territories. It is funny that they claim all South China Sea belong to them based on history. The Chinese crossed the sea first then the whole sea belong to them. There were no islands in South China Sea belong to China in the history. All islands they have right now were obtained from using force.

@saynotoignorance As Peter says, thank you. However, the problem is that the USA occupied Okinawa and even used the area around those islands as training exercises from the end of WW2 to 1970. If those islands belong to Taiwan (ROC) or China, then why would USA occupy them? It wasn't Taiwan or China that surrendered...why occupy their land? And if it was, then shouldn't the USA have asked for permission?

Yes, Japan did agree with the Potsdam Declaration and all the parties you said signed it. The problem is that the agreement wasn't clear in stating which island was which. For example, you mention the four main islands in the agreement, but Japan (and maybe even the USA) thought that those small islands were part of Kyushu. Obviously, ROC thought differently. I guess in 1945, they were short of lawyers who would explicitly mention every piece of land in such an important agreement. If the agreement explicitly said it belonged to ROC or Japan, all parties would still sign it...back then, no one knew there was oil/gas in the area!

Your point about the ROC brings up another problem. The party that signed that treaty isn't governing mainland China, but Taiwan. Yet if Japan and Taiwan were to go back and "fix" the wording of the treaty, China would be upset for Japan dealing with (what it sees) as a state.

One commentator in Japan had an interesting "solution". Jointly administer the island by Japan and China (maybe even Taiwan). No civilian (fisherman, etc.) can approach it until a solution is found. Basically, a cool-off period where we don't have civilians taking the law into their own hands.

Before the fisherman incident, relations between Japan and China were improving and they were even going to talk about how to jointly explore oil and gas in that region. One fisherman ruined it and moved peace back several steps and is considered a hero by some people commenting here. That is unfortunate.

Common Chinese people merely and purely believe of their governmental propaganda. There is no Diaoyu Island and territory problem in East China Sea what their government importantly claims. This unreasonable demand annoys us very much but it is not Chinese common people’s fault but their government. There is the Senkaku Islands which the Government of Japan made a Cabinet Decision on 14 January 1895 to erect a marker on the Islands to formally incorporate into the territory of Japan by course of every legal procedure.
And before 1969, there is no indication or claim from any other countries. Chinese map also indicate these islands belong to Japan.
Before WWII, We had the factory for producing dried bonito and workers. The biggest village in Uotsuri island lived 248 people. About one hundred households in Senkaku archipelago. We had many evidence.
One of them is the testimonial letter of Chinese authority which says thanks to the Japanese citizens of “Uotsuri island of Okinawa Japan” for rescue Chinese fishers as follows. They already confirmed the islands belong to Japan formally.

Japan always ignores the laws. Japan denid that they attacked Asian countries, Japan claimed that they simply helped the Asian countries away from the foreigners. Japan denied the existence of Nanking Massacre。 Japan denied the existence of “comfort woman” which was force to be sex slave for the Japan soldiers. Japan denied that there was 2.1 millions Korean was dragged from South and North Korea to the Japan for laboring, and many more …. How can we trust Japan about the Diaoyu Island claim? Japan claimed that the Diaoyu never was China territory until Japan make the claim? It is really a big joke. China documented the Diaoyu Island in Ming dynasty (around 1500) and many historical documents showed Japan recognized the existence of the Diaoyu Island.

How can we trust Japan?

Bottom line the ONLY reason china has any interest in the islands is because of the natural resources it offers, that being oil and gas. Before it was discovered to have this wealth the chinese had officially recognized the islands as being part of Japan.

To the people saying Japan will pay the price. Exactly who is going to dole it out on them the chinese? Thats laughable. Besides the fact that Japan has the US military behind it lets look at history here. The chinese have been dominated by Japan over the centuries. china has never and will never dominate Japan. they sells thousands of cars and everything to U.S . but they are blocking amrecans cars imports all the time, koreans are such selfish and greedy low moral people, they should never forget it was america who saved their coutry and gave them economical aids and markets so that south korea can now stop suffering from poverty and bullies from china and north korea.

and one korean fishing boat was just arrested one week ago by japanese costal guard for its stealing fish in japanese waters close to coast. and three weeks ago, another korean boats was arrested by north koreans for stealing fishes in very near water of north korean coast.

First, I want to declare that I am a native Chinese but I'm not going to curse at anyone from any country. what I really want to say to the people from other country is that the education we got and the circumstances of our upbring is different. Everyone could be of partial-minded and implusive because of their constriction and PATRIOTISM.

Both Chinese and Japanese should be more levelheaded about the island. We can tackle the problem more rational if the two nations' people can appreciate the other's view and be cool-headed. It is not a problem that can be solved only by curse and condemnation. It is a problem of cooperation.

I thought the Chinese communist government is good, if not the best, and the price for rebellion is higher.I really cherish the peace and development we have today. And the turbulance of our country is the least thing for me to see.

I don't hate Japanese, though I really did when I was young. But when I reached my adulthood, I knew more about the politices. It is the benefit that really counts and all the policies do serves that purpose. We Chinese and Japanese are not born to be enemies. Problems can always be solved in a better way when there's no hatred between us.

A 1785 Japanese map, the Sangoku tsūran zusetsu (三国通覧図説) by Hayashi Shihei adopted the Chinese kanji (釣魚臺 Diaoyutai) to annotate the Senkaku Islands, which were painted in the same color as China.

The Diaoyu islands (Senkaku Islands in Japanese) were China's frontier off-shore defence against wokou (Japanese pirates) during the Ming and Qing dynasties (1368-1911). The map of the Asian continent, including the map complied by Japanese in the 18th century,[28] unambiguously shows the islands were part of China.

This is the truth, look it up.

    To Matt,
    1. Get the facts right. If you think the Chinese people believe that everything and everywhere belongs to China. You have forgotten the biggest bully in the world. Tell me which country likes to poke their nose places thousands of miles away from their homeland. I wonder........
    2. If anyone knows the history. Japan has always been the aggressor. Just llke WWII, it is just their excuse to invade and expand their territories. Japan has never apologized for the atrocities they have committed in WWII nor have they revealed the true history to their own people. Okinawa used to be Ryukyu State. Japan occupied Ryukyu and claimed that it is Japanese. Ask the natives in Okinawa if they are Japanese or Okinawan.
    3. Why is it that there is always a double standard from the biggest bully in the world? If you say that Chinese manipulate their currency value, how about Japan, who has done so twice in recent one month? If you are printing so much money, is it a form of market manipulation? Why is it that one country is allowed weapon of mass destruction and other country isn't? After all, everyone is allowed to defend themselves, right?
    4. If you have trouble at home, don't blame others! The recent global financial crisis was created by greedy businessmen in the Wallstreet, China bought billions of US bonds to save your ass. Why wasn't these billions of dollars calculated into the so called trade deficit? China also used trillions of dollars domestically and internationally to save the world from further financial meltdown. It is China who bought the Japanese bonds and the European Bonds, so don't say China hasn't done her part. Now someone's finance is still in trouble, so they want other countries' currency to appreciate and at the same time they are printing their own money like mad to send the world into turmoil (once again) to save their own ass.

I don't think there is a point of an argument here as the Diaoyu Islands had been a part of China since ancient times and it has been all documented, evidence will show.

But then the fact is, during the WWII, when the KMT gov't was still in power (Today's Taiwan gov't) , China lost its control and it was stolen by Japan. When the War ended, thanks to the US (again), who is just so good in splitting countries like cutting a cake in pieces (Yogoslavia, India, Korea, MIddle East etc...too many can't list them all), " gave it back" to Japan, which they underminded todays' show.

Chang Kai Shek, the president of the Nationalism at that time, was still too wear at that time after WWII to have anything to negotiate but no doubt cannot avoid taking part of the responsibility.

After the civil war, Communist won , Mao kicked Chang over to Taiwan and took over China. Hence, for all the chinese people, it actually doesn't matter which party is ruling China. Whether communist/ nationalism, it doesn't matter at ALL, because Daioyu Island belongs to China,. and deep inside the hearts of the Japanese they know this, because these are the facts. Those who don't know just didn't study the history.

Ok, back to the reality, war is not likely to be happen, because both countries just do not have the guts. Yes, as a Chinese myself, we all are angry how 'weak' the current Chinese gov't is. But then... having a war over a silly island which there is even a debate whether it is actually an island or not.....

But then both sides cannot lose face. Will see how the story goes.

So i assume that history will repeat itself, ie, china will be the superpower of the earth just like for thousands of years (only until recent century that it lost almost everything??)

So i assume, just like the egyptian, babylonian etc civilization collapsed after being on the height of their power..... america is going to fall one day too?

i also already said JAPAN will pay price for what it did in the past for invading the world and killing millions of millions of asian people and what it is doing now continuning invading other people's territory and colonizing Okinawa which is never japanese terriotory but a indepedant kindom since it was founded by local native , japan already paid its some price for its war crime by getting its own people killed by nukes but what i said is japan will get another one large enough to kill all its own people soon if japan does not stop its evil behaior.

for china's doing in tibet or to other minorities, first of all, its no effective evidence china did so by contrast, japan's evil war crime was proven fully by international courts and that was why japanese war criminals were convicted with war crime and sentence to death and it was also why america decided to nuke japan for its crimes, secondly , even though i do believe china did it , but its no comparison with the dimension of japanese' war crimes,, even germany can not compare itself to japan, japan is biggest and most evil war crime country in the world.

japan's economy decrease rapidly 6.2% last year, by contrast china grew 9% on world highest speed last year, china surpass japan became world second largest economy while japan is keep falling ,and japan's economy is so dependant on china's market, if china close its market and stop its export of resources like rare earth to japan, japan will die even faster probably overnight, we already seen when china stopped rare earth exports to japan two weeks ago, japan surrended itslef to china immidiately , who is actually collasping rapidly , your japanese prime minister knows better than you , probably most other japanese knows better than you too.

say , dalai lama got its nobel prize 15 years ago, is tibet already become indepedant now ?? nothing happened over there but a stronger chinese ruling , unfortunately , the prize is just piece of usless paper, it will change nothing.

somehow i dont think this article is very neutral. why only bash china about the territorial disputes? Japan has a few of those and its not even worth mentioning? seems like japan is trying to hog all the islands around them. If americans understood a bit about chinese culture and history they would understand why the chinese want the islands back so badly. As a victim in world war 2 due to the imperial army chinese people don't want history to repeat itself, this is pretty much an invasion to chinese people. why won't chinese let it go after so many years? because chinese people learn from the past some chinese are still sour about ww2. i'm getting the feeling these disputes would never end well.

    Dear Chinese friends,
Yes Japan had caused catastrophic disaster for the surrounding countries.
But after WW2, Japanese policy is to preserve her security and existence through trusting in the justice and faith of the peace-loving peoples of the world,
Never again use her military power to resolve international problem but to defense herself, and it will, and Many Japanese are really proud of it.
At least in this 65 as everyone know
It is China that at present is threatening the surrounding countries and don’t inform their people of inconvenient facts to its government including Nobel Peace Prize.
One thing I can tell you is
    You got to be free.
    Come together
To the world all peoples have the right to live in peace, free from fear.
    And freedom of speech
It is not only westerner’s value judgment but universal common value shared by all humankind living in the world
Then we can work it out this “territorial” problem your government have claimed only since1970
You may say I'm liar or agitator.
But I'm not the only one.
I hope someday you join us.
And world will be as one.

My American friends,I admit that I envy your country's affluence, beacuse nobody would like to live in poor condition, and I would say your country's democracy atmosphere is the dream for us, however, it doesn't mean I can agree with the the idea that Chinese are too greedy, history is important, not the same as the American history,European history, China endured much pain from 1840, we do not dare to forget that experience, it's hard to imagine that we could forget the death of over 30 million citizens, killed by Japanese from 1937 to 1945. This is the history, the fact they have just understated for a few decades. If a criminal doesn't confess, and argue that he didn't do much harm to the others, the victim will never forgive him.

Are Japanese really worthy of being trusted? They behave quite modestly, but you will never know if they will hurt you in the next minute. China was an complete country and will be in the future, it was strong, the territory even included one million and a half square kilometers Russian lands, a a matter of fact, the Central Kingdom is much larger you could see now, we do not have the right to takeover the land of the others, but we do care about the heritage our ancestors left for us. Especially for Japan's occupation of the Diaoyu Island, there is no room for negotiation.
God bless China, those who said pigheaded Chinese should go to hell.
and of course god bless the peace of the world, after all, quarrel won't work, fight can only make the situation worse.

New money is always stuck-up. Next thing you know, China is going to claim Hawaii and California as theirs.

Lots of things aren't made in China, you just need to be bothered to look. Price difference is about $1 on a pack of socks, no difference on oil filters etc.

WW3 will see China and Walmart lined up against the U.S. and the rest of the world. Hopefully like past wars, the fighting and destruction will be contained to just China's coastline where their "showcase" cities are.

Its a good thing money doesn't really exist anymore or else the U.S. might actually have to worry about China's hollow threats of dumping US t-bills and tanking their own economy.

Of course, law means nothing to China. But to people who think international law should be used to decide sovereignty of disputed regions, what does the law really say what's important about that decision ? Locational proximity ? Who discovered first ? Presence of effective governance ? Strongest military force ? Shout the loudest ? Oldest record on books ? Any one knows ?

I read with interest a recent article in the Chinese papers here in Wuhan that China "central" has proposed to "again" RE-WRITE the history of China which was re-re-written by the current leadership in Beijing after 1949 to correct historical errors which corrections were incorrrect and should be corrected.

Wow! Sink your teeth into that one!

I am glad to see the rise of China. Its changes in the past thirty years, with the over One trillion in dollar equivalents invested by foreign companies, are worthy of our respect. Keep the damn door open this time. The changes will be even better.

I would like to draw attention to the general tenor of comments by most critics from China.

It is very obvious that most disputes, as seen from the general Chinese perspective, are the result of some belief that the USA is somehow behind it. True of false, you decide, but it is a lesson for any country aspiring to replace the USA. It is a lesson succinctly stated by President Truman of the United States back in 1949. "If you can't stand the heat then stay out of the kitchen."

For all of you in China, both friends and otherwise: as you see China become a more respected player in the international arena, be prepared to listen to the criticism which will inevitably come.

You will not be able to apply principles now employed by the Central Propaganda Department in Beijing, The world will not listen!

I wold like to know common people's opinions without any affection from governmental propaganda.
How to settle disputes without threats or bullyings to the other countries is very important for China to position itself to fit its economic influence.

You can read and hear what A sages of veteran reformers in China's Communist party demand. I am (we are all) respectful toward them.
    There's 8 demands as follows.

+Dismantle system where media organizations are all tied to higher authorities
+Respect journalists, accept their social status
+Revoke ban on cross-province supervision by public opinion
+Abolish cyber-police; control Web administrators' ability to delete/post items at will
+Confirm citizens' right to know crimes and mistakes committed by ruling party
+Launch pilot projects to support citizen-owned media organizations
+Allow media and publications from Hong Kong and Macau to be openly distributed
+Change the mission of propaganda authorities, from preventing the leak of information to facilitating its accurate and timely spread

I like Mr. Wen who was always positive for outgoing moderate policy.
I personally expect how and when he act..
Hope not disappoint peace loving people.

Those people who claim Japan as an aggressor can only use examples of the 20th century, and may be some in the 19th. However China has a long history of aggression for thousands of years which they choose to ignore. That's the kind of people China is producing. Good for China. Bad for the world.

The Senkaku Islands belongs to Japan under international law historically.
Japan has sovereignty over the declaration on January 14, 1895, was based on the doctrine of sovereignty over the Senkaku islands occupy in international law.
Chinese government recognized the senkaku islands as japan in 1919.
And China did not conduct an opposition protest against Japan for possession of a degree the fact that for 75 years,from1865 to 1970.

China has claimed sovereignty over the official ministry statement on December 30, 1971.

So The Senkaku islands have never belonged to Chine.

    1) The Diaoyu/Senkaku group consists of eight uninhabited islands, witha total land area of less than seven square kilometers.2 They lie
roughly 120 nautical miles northeast of Taiwan, 200 nautical miles
east of mainland China, and 240 nautical miles southwest of
    Japanese Okinawa.3

    2) http://www.larouchepub.com/lar/1996/ring_around_china.html#b2

    3) The term "Diao Yu Tai" in Chinese means "Fishing Platform". The earliest historical records of the islands are Chinese navigation records from 1403, and references to Diaoyu Islands occur in Chinese logs and Chinese maps of the Liu Chiu chain from that time. For several centuries, the Diaoyu Islands have been administered as one part of Taiwan and have always been used exclusively by Chinese fishermen as an base for fishing, both before and after World War II. (For more detail, see Prof. Kiyoshi Inoue's paper in 1972 "Diaoyu Islands and other islands are Chinese Territory") In 1874, Japan took Liu Chiu Islands (Okinawa) from China by force when Chinese Ching Dynasty was involved in several wars with other foreign countries. However, the Diaoyu Islands still remained under the administration of Taiwan, a part of China. After being defeated by Japan in the Sino-Japan War, China ceded Taiwan to Japan under the Shimonoseki Treaty. As a part of Taiwan, the Diaoyutai Islands belonged to Japan at that time. Taiwan was returned to China at the end of World War II in 1945 based upon the 1943 agreement of the Cairo and Potsdam Declarations. The Japanese government accepted the terms that stated in these documents"...that all the territories Japan has stolen from the Chinese, such as Manchuria, Formosa, the Pescadores, shall be restored to the Republic of China. In 1951 Article 2 of the Treaty of Peace with Japan signed by Japan and the Allied Powers (excluding both the ROC and the PRC) stated that, "Japan renounces all right, title and claim to Formosa and the Paracels". Article Four of the separate peace treaty signed between Japan and the ROC in 1952 declared that all agreements between Japan and China before 1941 were null and void. [2] As stated above, it is reasonable to take the mean that Diaoyu Islands should be returned to China because the Diaoyu Islands are one part of Taiwan. However, Japanese have maintained that the islands should not be included in these treaties. Both PRC and ROC have denied Japan´s claim ever since.` Extracted from an American article.

There has been much said and written about the Japanese honour – the make believe Samurai spirit. In fact there is very little honour in anything the Japs did since the WWII. The Japs pillaged, stole, murdered and raped the inncocents across Asia and the Pacific. Forced countless women and girls into sexual slavery which they referred to as comfort women. But of course the Japs deny this sort of evil ever took place. The Japs rewrite their history books annually. The education ministry is trying to paint the Japs as victim not aggressors in the face of history. The Japs have no shame, killing whale for food under the guise of research. The only research that they should really be doing is into their own dark and dirty history of WWII.

In this latest saga of the Diaoyu island. The Japs was the aggressors. They have no business patrolling and arresting anyone around those islands which are still under dispute.

The Japs have no honour. They are shameless and barbaric and cowardice. Remember Nanjing (The Rape of Nanking by Irish Chang)

Based on China's claim, that historically and geographically, the islands belong to China, then the Parcel's island belong to Vietnam based on the same reasoning. Just like China lost control during military conflict, so did the Vietnam. I don't understand how China can complain about the treatment of their fisherman when they do the exact same thing to Vietnamese fisherman. The Spratly Islands does belongs to a host of countries but the Parcel island is closer to Vietnam than China. Vietnam wants an international body to resolve this dispute but China refuses to come to the table. Vietnam has worked out an agreement with its southeast neighbors where China has refused. China has a choice, to resolve their disputes peacefully or go to war in which it can not win. It is ironic that many Chinese believe that Americans are bullies but yet they are acting the same. So far, the Chinese government has managed to cause tension with not only Japan, Vietnam, Phillippines, India, and now Zambia. China can not win a war period due to its policy. Sun Tze said it best: " Military might alone can not win a war, but you must have the support of its people." What am I am talking about? China's one child policy. If and when China goes to war with lets say Japan and Vietnam, once their sons return home in body bags, public support will quickly turn to anger. Do you think any Chinese would want their only son to go to war and die? Who will carry the family name? Who will take care of their parents. As the Japanese and Vietnamese have learned, war is not the answer. Vietnam and Japan has learned to become friends with America and move on. China needs to follow suit before it is taught another lesson.

No doubt that the islands belong to Japan, they always have and always will be part of the Ryukyu chain of islands that are administered by Japan. No doubt about that at all.
Why China is suddenly fanning national pride is to sidetrack attention from failures at home. The communist party has been extremely corrupt over the past 20 years and much of the wealth that has come into China has ended up in the pockets of a select few and the military. The majority of the population is completely brainwashed and terrified of the authorities, which are so numerous and paid for by the money from the West. The society in rural China still operates under fear and suspicion, reminiscent of the 1950's, while the people that controls them live in freedom and immense wealth. Their kids live in America, Europe and Australia, in huge mansions and drive flash cars. They go the best universities and schools, while Tibetans get stripped of their land and language. These well to do few also control the military or form part of the military think-tanks that are in charge of firing brainwashed poor uneducated locals with anti Japanese sentiment. This whole dispute was planned and Japan was intentionally pulled into the scrap. As if the Senkaku islands would make a real difference to China's woes and poverty.
If China is a dragon waking, it is a dragon waking to the injustice its own government is inflicting on it's own people. The Fat Cats cannot keep diverting the attention of the people of China, especially with little rocks in the middle of the sea.

It does not matter if they were historically part of China for thousands of years. Under international law, they are not part of China now. The islands are administered and controlled by Japan. The world lives in an age that is defined by the Treaty of Westphalia, not some Sino-centric system of thousands of years before where China was at the center of a tributary client kingdom. That imperial Chinese history doesn't matter anymore. The Chinese government should get over it and stop causing consternation on the international stage with these ridiculous claims to "historical" territory. It should be gracious that the international system that exists today has given it the opportunity to bring prosperity to its people rather than wanting to challenge and eventually supplant it with a ridiculous Sino-centric system.

    Hi Kevin,
Both China and Japan cannot legitimately lay claims to the Senkaku or Diayou Islands, because they don't share a common maritime border.Reports have it that the Island lies well beyond 200 Nautical Miles from both countries. They're beyond the Exclusive Economic Zones of both countries. It was also reported that the Islands lie on the High Seas where all nation-states can navigate and explore. It's time China and Japan acknowledge this and stopped the diplomatic row over the Islands.
Perhaps the solution would be a condominium that would also include the United States, China, Japan and Vietnam. It's quite possible.

If so, then the island belongs to China. why pick military? well, in most cases, military is an extension and representation of the nation. So please, chinese people, if you want the island, all you have to do is send your soldiers. Case resolved. As for your thousands of history the island belongs to China argument... well, if your argument stands, France, UK, Turkey, Egypt should all belong to Italy (Great Rome).

Because the social studies map of the China drew clearly "Senkaku Islands" before 1970.
and the border is pulled Senkaku Islands and between China.

In Senkaku Islands (Diaoyu Island in Chinese), there was a Japanese factory processing marine products in 1910-1940. In these date, 40-50 fishermen lived there Then, the islands were used as place for US Navy and Marine airplane to take target practice after WWII, because USA occupied Okinawa area. China admitted this situation because Sneak Islands were (and are) in Japanese Territory. When USA returned Okinawa to Japan in early 1970s, Senkaku Islands were also returned. Most Chinese people except those of Chinese Communist Party do not know this history at all, because the communist party has not tell the actual international situation to their citizens. If a Chinese say the islands are not within Chinese territory, s/he will be killed by the Communist party. Or at least, s/he was confined in prison as Mr. Liu Xiaobo. So I did not supersize why ordinary Chinese people are say repeatedly what the Chinese communist party is saying. Simply, they are ignorance because the communist party throughout completely citizens’ eyes to international world.

Just a small diversion for the sake of clarity, okay? Chinese historians are unanimously agreed that Qin Shihuang was the first emporer to unite, so-called China. He called it "Qin". That was 2,500 years ago. It only lasted for a few years.
When he united the region which we today call 'China', much of the current China to the south and west was not part of his kingdom (Qin). Without any evidence to contradict this historical reality, the issue of "thousands of years" is moot.
When Qin Shihuang united the Asian region which he called "Qin", he took no position on the ownership of any islands in the East China Sea or in the South China Sea. That includes the largest of all of them, the island called Taiwan.
Now comiing down to the present date, Dr. Sun Yatsen overthrew the rulers of the Qing Dynasty in 1911, he established a land called "The Republic of China. It was the official representatives of that government, who, at the end of the second world war with Japan, signed the treaty of peace with Japan. That agreement acknowledged the fact that the Senkaku islands were part of the Okinawa chain.
Now most every government in the world recognizes "The Peoples Republic of China as the legitimate government of China. In doing so, no government felt that by changing recognition from "The Republic of China" to "The Peoples Republic of China" that the treaty of peace with Japan would thereby be abrogated. Indeed, if "The Peoples Republic of China" chooses to ignore that treaty signed by Jiang Jieshih, then the issue of who controls Taiwan is on the table.
What should we do, you might ask. I say that the world does not need any more arrogance or ignorance. The issue of its resources should be resolved for the benefit of mankind. This includes the unmeasurable resources in and around the Antartic, and the more probable plentitude of resources under the sea streching out from the north pole which was claimed by Admiral Perry more than 100 years ago.
Maybe I should do some genealogy. I could be his only remaining descendant!

I ask myself, who are trustworthy, the Japanese or the Chinese...the Chinese lie like they don't understand the concept of honesty...the Japanese are sometimes too honest. The Chinese have stolen enough of that which they claim is rightfully theirs...there undersea claims are preposterous too...time for China to overthrow its aggressive and warmongering regime and join the real world.

This is all part of China's twenty year plan to take all of Asia. They are using these disputes over small islands to test the reactions of the rest of the world. When they see that no one opposes them, except with words, they will escalate to taking Taiwan. Eventually they will invade Southeast Asia since they will soon have a standing military of over 30 million, more than the rest of the world combined. And the west just keeps giving them more and more factories, more and more business and more and more technology. Personally I won't buy anything Made in China. Their intentions are anything but peaceful. Boycott China. Enough Already!

i'm little fed up with the news related to the two countries, japan and china. many try to justify their theories that once the area belong to their soil. however, the clear thing is there is nobody or an org. which can judge it and give us the conclusion. what i want the two countries is to forget about it and put the relation on the right track.

Each country has their own documentations and one truth is not the same as another's truth. It's impossible to verify ownership. It comes to the I say you say argument. Just give all the islands to the US and stop killing each other.
Japan may have been an aggressor in the past but it's a changed country ever since they were completed defeated (psychological as well.) Japan now is a beautiful country with great culture and I think China will probably never measured up to Japan's level (regardless of how big China may grow. The outside shell of China doesn't say much about what's really inside it.)

i want to invite you to my country, japan.
2 years ago i went to beijing and shanghai. though i felt a little bluntness in beijing, people in shanghai are more kind and polite than i imagined. i may say that averaged japanese have some biased views against people in china: greedy, fake-product oriented, blunt, brainwashed by the government, and forth.

only the way to know people in each country is to access them directly. sorry to say, many japanese seem not interested in patriotism as 20-30 year old chinese people have been educated since the begining of 80s. aside from this argument, i admire you are very patriotic on the issue.

but i want to know how you justify the captain of the trawler ship who intentionally collide with the japanese coast guard boat. was it a mission from the government to do so? even if it happened in your territory, the violent action is not the role of the captain but of the government of your country. if the same thing happened to a japanese captain in chinese territory, our government would admit he is arrested by the chinese government anytime. the territory itself is not the issue. existence of the jusutice is the issue.

Paracel islands were belonged to VietNam who was the first finder and keeper. The islands were administered and controlled by VietNam until 1974 when China robbed it from VN. Recently, they are increasingly being harrassed by the warships and aggressive surveillance boats from the China and arresting then fining. Moreover, the Vietnamese fishmen are being killed by these Chinese ships almost every month. So all Vietnamese are now ready to teach the most despised neighbor, China another lesson that their ancestors were learnt in the thousands year of China history. Big warning to the invader.

The best thing a person can do to avoid diabetes is to exercise. People who exercise 30 to 60 minutes per day, at least 5 days per week, can lower their risk of developing diabetes by almost 50 percent. Exercise improves the health of your heart and lungs, reduces stress, reduces fat, increases metabolism and lowers blood sugar levels.
