(CNN) - A recent study released by the Nielsen Company that examines the consumer and media habits of women in emerging and developed countries has found that women in India are the most stressed – and they spend differently.

The Women of Tomorrow Study, which examined 6,500 women across 21 different nations from February through April 2011, found that an overwhelming 87% of Indian women said they felt stressed most of the time, with 82% claiming they had no time to relax.

Indian women are not alone. The vast majority of Mexican (74%) and Russian (69%) women surveyed also reported feeling stressed.

List of 21 countries surveyed in order of most stressed women:

  1. India (87%)
  2. Mexico (74%)
  3. Russia (69%)
  4. Brazil (67%)
  5. Spain (66%)
  6. France (65%)
  7. South Africa (64%)
    Italy (64%)
  8. Nigeria (58%)
  9. Turkey (56%)
  10. U.K. (55%)
  11. U.S.A. (53%)
  12. Japan (52%)
    Canada (52%)
    Australia (52%)
  13. China (51%)
  14. Germany (47%)
  15. Thailand (45%)
    South Korea (45%)
  16. Malaysia (44%)
    Sweden (44%)

Reuters noted from the survey that despite being the most stressed, Indian women were also the most likely to spend disposable income on themselves. Over three quarters said they would splurge on health and beauty products, while 96% responded that they would buy clothes.

Across the board, women in developing economies spent more of their additional cash on clothes, health and beauty items, groceries and education for their children. Women in the developed economies surveyed dedicate more of their cash to vacations, savings and paying off debt.

“Women across the globe are achieving higher levels of education, joining the workforce in greater numbers and contributing more to the household income,” said Susan Whiting, vice chair of Nielsen, in a release that accompanied the survey. “Women are increasing their spending power, and with that they gain more control and influence over key household decisions. As a result the women of today and tomorrow are powerful consumers and understanding their habits and attitudes is critically important for marketers and advertisers.”

Nielsen’s survey found that worldwide, women play multiple roles that contribute to their stress levels, but that the social infrastructure allowing them to navigate these roles differed between emerging and developed markets. As a result, women in emerging markets tended to be more stressed than women in the developed world, with women in India, Mexico and Nigeria feeling the most time-pressured.

So why exactly are women in emerging markets more stressed than women in developed countries? The Economic Times suggests that, in the case of India, companies and workplaces have developed whilst society has remained static, meaning that women must juggle a modern career and busy home life as well as conforming to traditional standards.

Although times appear to be changing – women surveyed in emerging economies saw the financial stability, education and access to technology for their daughters improving faster than their counterparts in the developed world.

With time-pressured but empowered women controlling household budgets, how should marketers go about getting them to loosen their purse strings? The key, it seems, is social media.

Irrespective of their global location, women are more prolific users of social networking than men. Women talk 28% more and send 14% more texts than men every month, and also visit more Internet community sites than their male counterparts. More than half of women in both developed and emerging countries say that computers, mobile phones and smart phones have changed their lives for the better.

“To connect with women, strategies should be social and relevant,” said Whiting, noting that women’s increased use of social networking meant that they followed brands more than men.

Nielsen’s results show that older forms of advertising still hold sway. In 17 of the 21 countries surveyed, television was rated the number one source for finding out about new products and stores. Yet around the world, over 70% of women in developed and over 80% of women in emerging markets completely or somewhat trust word-of-mouth recommendations over all other advertising mediums.

Hmmm, this survey seems to have addressed only middle-class professional women (who would have disposable income to spend on 'clothes, health and beauty items'). This represents a small proportion of women in many countries. I would suppose that women in Somalia for instance, which has been in a state of war for decades and is currently suffering from the world's 'worst humanitarian crisis' in the form of a devastating drought might qualify as slightly more "stressed" than any of the countries on the list. Just sayin'

Interesting that women's status in a culture doesn't seem to play a role in stress levels.
In India woman have low status, but in South Korea it's even lower. Yet South Korea's
women have a low stress level.

Maybe this article should be re-titled as "countries in which well-off women feel the most stress from the societal pressures of career success and consumerism". Not to downplay the real stress these women feel, but it can hardly compare with the institutionalized oppression, violence, crushing poverty, disease, natural and man-made disasters that women in some of the other countries mentioned in this thread must suffer, for whom the prospect of self-determination, a career or disposable income to spend on themselves sounds like a fairy tale existence.

The women most under stress are those in war torn, disease ridden, drought wasted countries who are desperatly trying to keep their children and themselves alive just one more day. Shop for clothes? They can't even find anything to eat or clean water to drink! I find this article trivial and insulting to a woman's intelligence.

It would be interesting to see correlations of stress to those women's attitude. How do stressed out women see the world, feel, think compared to less stressed women in the same culture? What education levels and jobs do they hold? I would not be surprised to get more meaningful results from there.

I don't know about stress, but German women are the worst loudmouthed, bossy, arrogant, queue-jumping, prima donna B!+CHES I have ever had the unfortunate experience of knowing! Thank goodness it is not socially acceptable to act that way in America, Australia, or anywhere else that I have been. It must have to do with the fact that they have been treated as second-class citizens for so long. After all, women cannot be drafted to fight in their stupid, nationalist wars. Even today, German women cannot pass on German citizenship to their children!

It's not a religion, it's a social and political system, disguised as religion.

Right now Saudi women are distressed because the Qur'an says four of them are worth one man, yet driver seats in cars accommodate one person only. Saudi women want a couch instead. Also they want traffic guessing courses, to alleviate their stress caused by not being able to see traffic through their veils. Poor girls...

Can't believe this ridiculously flawed study is the main headline on CNN.com. I agree with most of what other commenters have said. The headline invites us to find out where "the most stressed women in the world" live, only to then tell us that "oh, only 21 largely successful and stable countries were covered". And its obvious that only well-off upper-middle class women were surveyed. What an absolute joke. These women are probably stressed because they couldn't buy that expensive bottle of perfume they always wanted. Can't believe I fell for the deceptive headline.

In my experience, narcissists and other self-centered individuals tend to magnify the causes of stress in their lives, and to disregard the stresses experienced by others. So they would naturally rank themselves higher on this scale. The make-up prioritizing substantiates this theory regarding narcissists and their exaggerations about how stressful their lives are.

I'd like to know what the respondents listed as the CAUSES of their stress.

    Thank you, Black Hawk.

There is more freedom there, so the women are more free to complain. Imagine the stress levels of Muslim girls, where they cannot complain.
The friendly Muslim savior Muhammad said MORE women go to hell then men because they "are ungrateful to their husbands".
Another reason why Muslim women can't complain: they are afraid they will go to hell. There is psychological fear of being condemned by their husbands...all because of what a misogynist said.

Go ahead, Muslims, tell me I've got it all wrong.

I hate to tell you that womens stress now is coming from guys not putting up with thier crap anymore.
I tried marriage for 20 years and I was tired of not being appreciated after I provided 20 years of security and comfort for her and the kids. All she had to do was keep a house clean.
So I took the kids, I threw her out, and I own the house that I paid for.
Tell me women have stress...for what? Sitting on thier rears all day and giving men crap?
Thier is NO point to ever get married because women destroyed every reason.

And here I was thinking of the mothers of 5 or 6 in India, the stress being getting every one of them fed and educated... Giving information on the lifestyle and life circumstances of these women and which percentage their demography is of the whole (female) population in their country really would put this survey into perspective. As it is, it doesn't really say much about women in any country in general, it only makes a statement about those 6500 that have been interviewed.

women in muslim countries are not as stressed as people think. This is all proganda. First of all muslim women have no pressure to look nice and pretty for everybody like in western world. They have the obligation too look attractive only to thier husbands hence they dress modestly. But compare with the women in West, all the time trying look attractive for everyone, hold jobs because so many are living as single mothers and try hard to compete against men. That is lot of pressure. Look at the Western media, women being used as s**x objects for every purpose, movies, ads, jobs etc

This study does not seem to take into consideration the poverty factors affecting stress. Looks like it looks at women who either work or have opportunities to work. And in such a case India being on top makes a lot of sense.

Educated women seem to be encouraged to work in India. While working women seem to be happy at work, the situation is the traditions take over once they come home – their families expect them to do every thing for them. Even with Indian Americans that seem to be the same case. The "Indian women spend their disposable money on themselves" relates to an ability to do so, that is actually a freedom, a privilege, to do so, as is the case in that part of the world.

In the end Indian women are heavily stressed as they want to achieve in a very traditional world. In more theocratic societies such as Middle East, most women perhaps may not aspire to do things that seem unfathomable so they are less stressed.

    My 2 cents.

This survey is an insult to the real burdens women carry.

Stressed or aware of being stressed? The great majority of women are beyond stressed, they just identify it with being a woman, or alive, and accept it as such. This article was written from a CONSUMERIST and rather NARROW point of view, and speaks for the tiny portion of those who could express their needs; but about the mother who's worried her children will be raped or forced to become soldiers, the women whose social standing cannot allow them to aspire for anything more than a full stomach and a shirt on their back; the sisters who have to scrounge about to support families dying of famines and wars; the battered, stunted and silenced women, etc .... about these women, THE MAJORITY, I believe, we won't hear about, 'cause they couldn't be reached by the Nielsen Company.

I would say that women living in countries where they have little rights must be incredibly stressed. Trying to keep your honour intact in Cairo which is completely rife with sexual harrassment must be stressful in itself and what about women who are genitally mutilated against their will in African and Arab countries and what about being a child bride to a 50 y o first cousin. This list is not identifying the things that really stress women.

He said more women MAY go to hell than men because they backstab and backbite more than men against others. Backbiting is a seroius sin and leads to many problems

I don't understand how you measure stress obejctively between 21 countries and get a large enough sample size. Studies like this introduce so much subjectiveness it is ridiculous. I agree with another person who commented that no Middle Eastern countries were included in the "study". The one thing which I will add to this though is that just because you are rich or poor, that doesn't mean you are any more or less stressed. I do believe that people who are poorer have more reason to be stressed, but that doesn't intrinsically mean someone is going to be stressed.

Hold on, women in Saudi Arabia, Iran, Pakistan do not even know they're oppressed or being treated like cattle. They think that's how the order is, much like sheep. So they're not stressed.

Women have been suppressed in every culture in the world for 2000 years at least. The suppression is absolute now in this world scene. If men were as suppressed as women, they would be even crazier than they are....more violent, uncaring, and selfish.

Chr, you are so full of it. Women do not have it 'great' in the US. There is still a long way to go, making it important that women still fight for their rights. We still make far less than men for the same amount of work, are expected to be another income in the home, and come home and do traditional 'women's' work. Our society still hasn't caught up to the changes of women not being at home. May I also add that they are also expected to take a large part of the responsibility of child rearing?

Personally, I call this list bogus. It doesn't seem like there is a large enough sample to truly give an accurate assessment? Also, there should be a better measurement of 'stress' than just someone's opinion. That can change with the time and day.

i know in many countries.... doing so will probably get you carried off....even in the U S....now people are so uptight and have lost their sense of humor.... life is generally a big steamy pile.... and you have to admit reality once in a while
and let out the beast....otherwise you will develop other problems..... disease...physical or mental....

All of you men who posted...esp. Mike. You sound very bitter. One relationship does not define an entire gender. First off
I have been married for 23 years and I can tell you the amount of times my husband cleaned or cooked. He does work hard every day and tries to provide the best life he can for us. But he does not in any way appreciate how much I do. In the good ole USA both parents need to work unless you have a lot of money. Women usually work full time and raise their kids and clean and cook. Men just go to work and come home and they think everything should be done for them. That is where the stress comes from. And for those men who say you want it both ways..youre idiots. Don't you think I would have stayed home with my kids if I could have? I'm not working for my ego I'm working for my family.

Sorry I fell for the title. For one, they only surveyed 6500 women in 21 countries. There are about 3.2 billion women on the planet. That is WAY less than 1% surveyed. Why did they even waste their time surveying? The reason: If you made it to the bottom of the article you learn that the whole crux of it was to better understand how to market products more effectively to women. How insulting! Women are under a lot of stress today to take care of the home and family and provide for more of the finances in a home – even when they have a husband. In today's economy it is very hard to have only one party in the home working. Until that stereotype changes women will be stressed. That is a lot of pressure for anyone.

That doesn't shock me one bit. We had a guy from India at my last job that was just an absolute jerk. My boss thought he might have a problem with women. I guess that's probably what it was. I've noticed that men in Indian restaurants seem to have a problem with women also. Odd. I had a friend in college from India. I never met her spouse (arranged marriage), but I'm not convinced it was the greatest thing. Seems like the students that I met that had those types of arrangements were actually interested in other people at school and not their spouse so much. no shock there either.

Women are stressed all over the world because men don't really take on their fair share of work in the house. They are too busy playing gold, watching baseball on TV, fishing, drinking cheap beer, and going to strip clubs. No-not all dads, but too many of them. What's even worse: they don't spend quality time with their kids, monitor their homework, or drive them anywhere. We have a world of deadbeat (slacker) dads who live at home! Oh–I am a dad, but I love my wife enough that I actually try to help out around the house; most men don't really love their wives in any meaningful way; if they did, they would not treat them as second class citizens in their own homes. In truth, most husbands are not even good friends. And you wonder why women don't feel like having sex? Men: grow up, get up off the couch and help your wife!

This survey is bullshit. In India most people are living life king size. What they show is very different from reality. All middle class household has maids for cleaning house, utensils, cooking and personal drivers at home. They have a lot of time on there hand that could be factor leading to stress other than that they are not as stressed as women in western countries like ours. Woman has so much in there plate here. They have to work, no choice, because the way these countries are designed a middle class cannot meet there both ends even basic necessities if both partners are not working. I am sure there lot more stress in western world than any other part.

I would've never guessed India to be the most stressed. I figured it would be the US or some other 1st world nation. However, it does make sense when you consider that traditionalism and modernism is butting heads there in India and in other countries that a traditionally considered 3d world. That picture is entirely offensive. Why is it paired with this poll? I the implication is that all women are mothers, and thus children are what causes them the most stress? Which is not a fact but an assumption made to cater to stereotypes of readers and increases hits. It's also very demeaning to those women who are mothers, because it suggests that childbearing and raising are natural aspects of being a woman, and thus to be stressed by them would be unimportant or frivolous. CNN continues to play to the lowest common denominator in its online journalism.

this list is so hocus-pocus it is hilarious. Just the Photo-shop image heading the article is enough to make me burst – either with anger, or just outright pity and pain for the idiots who prepared all this brainless rubbish.
There are so many coefficients which this organisation did not take into account – either from blind stupidity or totally blind ignorance. For example: Is an overstressed woman in California on 10 aspirins a day, the same as a stressed woman in Hyderabad? Obviously, NO. However, in both cases, the common thread is probably the husband – or his absence, it does not matter.
I agree with plenty of comments above – and Iran, Iraq, Pakistan, the whole Arab world, or even Islamic world. Where husbands are just ignorant layabouts, women are stressed.
So I am not surprised to see Spain high on the list. "Men" here are still of the macho-iberico class, a class of its own, though Mexico runs very close..
This whole investigation has been an absolute waste of time and money and serves absolutely no purpose.
Perhaps that is why it got on to CNN.......? ........................ just saying ..................

India had a woman prime minister for 15 years between 1966 and 1984. Would you Americans ever have elected a woman head of state back in the mid 60s? rob: you are confusing what islam says with traditions. muslim women have stress too but not as much you guys think because there is so much proganda against Islam these days. There is huge misconception that women are discrminated in islam. A lot of stuff you see in muslim countries are old traditions that has nothing to do with Islam e.g.
    1. GM is not mentioned anywhere in islam
    2. Women have the right to get education and hold jobs, drive etc
    3. women have the right to divorce. But divorce is rare. In contrast, it is more than 50% in west
    4. there is no obligation on women even to do house hold work.
    6. dressing should be modest but covering face is not mentioned anywhere
    7. Ploygamy is allowed but less than 1% of married muslim men have more than one wife and there are strict rules to follow.
    8. women have the right to half the property from thier parents. It is half of men because women have no obligation whatsoever to earn for thier family or spend on them. It is the man's responsibilty.

Keep in mind these rules etc were all mentioned 1400 years ago.

go to africa and you will see how women are being treated, many are x-tian but that does not mean x-tinanity also supresses women.

The issue is that women will always be exploited in different ways everywhere. In first world countries, women are also being exploited and fooled in the name of freedom and liberty e.g they are gettiing impregnated and being allowed to kill thier babies (abortion) etc...

Women have always stress. It doesn not matter whether she is in India or somewhere else. Because their duties are difficult. Their responsibility are heavy, especially working women. Regarding non working women, they have stress too. They need to care home business, they are dependent on their husbands to income. In conclusion, in each situation, women have always stress.

Woman in India are stressed because they spend all their time and money on Children, husbands and in-laws which most western woman don't do. What they may be saying is that they would like to spend their money on themselves which they cannot. Indian woman are chaste and don't easily leave their ,family which may explain why they are stressed when they have insensitive husbands. India is essentially an old country that gave world yoga and meditation but woman are not able to practice that due to family responsibility and selflessness.

"Overwhelming 87% of Indian women said they felt stressed most of the time, with 82% claiming they had no time to relax."
So it appears this is solely based on each participant's perception of their own stress levels – with little or no normalization of the data to determine – objectively – how stressed out these women really are. Even forgetting about the countries and solcial classes that were not included, the survey results are meaningless to "Where do the world's most stressed women live?". This article should have been titled "How to get women to spend yet more money on shopping, despite any social presssures they may be feeling, regardless of whether shopping is really helping them cope?" I'd Ike to see an article on "retail therapy", its benefits and risks, including addiction.

Guys and girls, stop blaming Islam for being the cause of stress for woman. I'm a Muslim in Malaysia and non of us are treated that way. It's not the religion's fault, but the society in those places. FYI, in Islam a man will go to hell if he is not fair and kind to his wife or wives.
