[It is the Republic of China, OK!]
"Republic of China" (ROC) is the official name for Taiwan Island; every ID card, passport, government unit and military unit in Taiwan using the name "Republic of China". This is the basic knowledge. (CNN should not change other country's name). The Republic of China confronts "People's Republic of China" for 63 years; expelling Communism from Mainland China and restoring China as greatest country on the earth is the national goal, she is winning.
10th October is the national day of ROC in Taiwan, because revolution on 10th October of 1911 (Wuhan in Mainland China) overthrew the Qing Dynasty. So this year is 101st years for ROC. Sun Yatsen is the founding father of ROC; his portrait is on the currency notes of ROC Taiwan. The national flag of "Republic of China" had been used in Mainland China.
Now Acer, Asus, hTc, TSMC (Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company), Formosa Plastics Group, and Hon Hai Precision Industry (Foxconn) are the famous (civilian) enterprises of ROC Taiwan; although the US media only emphasize the negative events of Foxconn, in reality it is largest civilian enterprise of Chinese world; it has most employees on manufacturing in the world.
Actually, I think CNN is right that use Taiwan instead of the Republic of China. Although Republic of China is the official name for Taiwan Island , most people lived in Taiwan will call our own country Taiwan, not ROC. Maybe you can try to ask some Americans "do you know the Republic of China?", no one (or a few ) can give you right answer. But when you ask them "do you know Taiwan?", I think most of them will tell you "YES".
although most of foreigners don't know what is Republic of China.But there is no single word refering to Republic of China in the film.i think it a little offends nationals who live in Taiwan.Because Republic of China is a formal name not Taiwan.

This has been as one of the most controversial issues and topic everyday between local Taiwanese residents and Chinese (they immigrated from the Mainland China after KMT was defeated by Mao-teh-Don communists around 1945.
Mainly, the name of ROC was created by Koumingtang (KMT) since they escaped from communists China, and expelled from member of the United Nation in 1979. the factors are factors, 90% of Taiwanese have never intentioned to use the name of ROC or recognized ourseleves as a Chinese ID. it's totally as a political motivated by the ruling government, Mr.Ma. we are shameful to read the name of "ROC" on the papaers wherever we saw or forced to use it.
Honestly speaking I think Taiwan is a great place to live and stay. I had the opportunity to work and live there for 1 year and I had an amazing experience, I heard about the controversial phrases that Taiwan belongs to China, but how about if we accept that Taiwan is an amazing island who lives in peace and giving opportunities to other people from different countries of the world? The life in Taiwan is secure, healthy and with a lot of things to discover, is really important to question if Taiwan is under the ownership of China? R.O.C. or not for me Taiwan will be always a free place to live and enjoy life...

Visited Taiwan for the first time in October. I really liked the people who were very friendly and helped us everywhere. There were just two bad apples, one was the post office clerk in the main Taipei station who refused to change our money and another small restaurant that overcharged us. But overall, everything was very efficient and the subway system is fabulous. The wide variety of food and tropical fruits were delicious . I would certainly visit Taiwan again.

I visited Taiwan in November of this year. Mostly stayed around Taipei. The people were extremely friendly. LOTS of Mainland tourists around though so I can see how important China is to the tourist industry in Taiwan. Honestly didn't feel the high energy that I feel in Shanghai, HK, and Tokyo though. Food is meh, but that's a personal taste.
Hmmm. China owns Taiwan? Then China elects Taiwan official? No! Then China governs Taiwan? No! Then they both can vote in each others elections? No! So they share the same currency? No! So, they don't need visas to travel between them? No! Hmmm, I know they have the same laws? No!
